BACKGROUND

The Sydney Downtown Development Association (SDDA) is a voice and trusted resource for businesses that has been operating in Downtown Sydney since 1989. The SDDA’s membership includes over 250 businesses. SDDA is a non-profit organization and, with two full-time employees and a volunteer Board of Directors. It supports the growth and development of Downtown Sydney through marketing initiatives, member advocacy and support, government relations, placemaking projects, programming, and events to make Downtown Sydney a more vibrant place to gather.
 

Core funding of SDDA comes from a levy on commercial property taxes collected by the municipality and disbursed monthly to SDDA. These properties must be located within the boundaries of SDDA (from the Waterfront to George Street; and from Dorchester to Townsend Street). Additional project-specific funding is received through government grants, community support, and the management of a parking lot.

Job Title: Executive Director

Job Summary:

The Executive Director of Sydney Downtown Development Association (SDDA) plays a pivotal role in leading and advancing the organization's mission to promote economic vitality, community engagement, and overall enhancement of Downtown Sydney. This position oversees all aspects of SDDA’s operations, including strategic planning, financial management, stakeholder relations, and program development, in order to drive sustainable growth and prosperity within the community.

 

The Sydney Downtown Development Association is a fast-paced environment, and offers a wide variety of experiences and day-to-day activities. Staff will be expected to work from time to time outside of regular office hours such as evenings and the occasional weekend. The office closes during the Christmas holidays, and during this time staff are paid, and this is in addition to their vacation time. The Executive Director is entitled to 15 days of vacation each fiscal year. SDDA is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and growing the downtown core. Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives to achieve the organization's goals and objectives, in alignment with the mission and vision of Sydney Downtown Development Association.

Financial Management: Oversee budget planning, financial forecasting, and fiscal management to ensure the effective utilization of resources and the financial sustainability of the organization.

Stakeholder Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with local businesses, property owners, all levels of government, community organizations, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and support for downtown revitalization efforts.

Advocacy and Public Relations: Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the Business Improvement District, representing the organization's interests to the public, media, and government officials, and advocating for policies and initiatives that benefit the downtown community.

Program Development: Identify opportunities for new programs, services, and partnerships to enhance the economic, cultural, and social vibrancy of Downtown Sydney, and oversee the implementation and evaluation of existing programs. Identify grant opportunities and develop grant proposals to secure funding for BID initiatives and projects, as well as cultivate relationships with sponsors to support the organization's fundraising efforts.

Team Management: Provide effective leadership and management oversight to staff members, contractors, and volunteers, fostering a positive work environment and promoting professional development and growth.

Board Support and Governance: Work closely with the Board of Directors to provide guidance, support, and strategic direction, and ensure compliance with organizational bylaws, policies, and regulations.

Marketing and Promotion: Build marketing and communications strategies and campaigns to promote downtown events, businesses, and attractions, and enhance the area's visibility and appeal, while strengthening the Downtown Sydney brand in the CBRM.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related field or demonstrate equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years of proven leadership experience.

  • Experience in budgeting, financial analysis, and resource management.

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of urban development principles, economic development strategies, and downtown revitalization best practices.

  • Strong strategic planning and organizational management skills, with the ability to develop and execute effective plans and initiatives.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in advocacy, public relations, and government relations.

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team, manage conflicts, and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

  • Strong commitment to community development, economic revitalization, and improving the quality of life for downtown businesses, locals, and visitors.

  • Previous experience in owning/operating a business is an asset.

  • Basic graphic design knowledge is an asset.

 

Salary Range: $55,000 - $65,000
